What Is SEO?

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or “organic” search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.

A lot of hype is talked about SEO and how complicated it is but in reality it boils down to three main areas.

  1. On-Page
  2. On-Site
  3. Off-Site

On-Page SEO is configuring a web page so that the content is relevant to the keyword used in the page title and description and that it is “quality” content, meaning that is is informative, factual and of real use to the reader.

On-Site SEO is configuring the internal navigation around the site to be both optimal for the search engines and human users. It should be easy to navigate and the user should be able to “see” where they are within the site.

Off-Page SEO is basically about the links on other peoples websites that point back to yours. The “quality” of these links are what count. There are plenty of services that offer to provide hundreds and thousands of backlinks to your site but theose links are usualy worthless. Getting backlinks from websites that match the topic or theme of your site and that have what is called “authority” in the eyes of Google are what count.

Once you have your website correctly configured, getting quality backlinks are an essential and continuing requirement to maintain high rankings in the search engines.

The key to having effective and successful SEO is having good internal linking structure, quality, readable and interesting content and get the right links from the right websites leading to the right web page on your site.

An example of how powerful this can be is demonstrated by one of our client’s web sites. His site is number one on Google.co.uk. There are only 62 backlinks, number two has 147 and number three on Google has a staggering 56,600,000 backlinks! (if you want to know what the site is and the keyword phase is then contact us.)

This goes to show that getting the correct mix of On-Page/On-Site SEO and Off-Page SEO can be a true David and Goliath story!
